Photography by Margaret Bourke-White, "At the time of the Louisville Flood" (1937) original link listed below.
This is one of my favorite photographs because it shows the concrete truth regardless of what the meaning of the advertisement is supposed to represent. The story as told by the advertisement is, America is a great place to live where everyone is happy and free. Now you have this great photograph of the people standing the the food line trying to get what they can just to make it in a harsh world. This has such a contrast of meanings it tells the story as told by the automobile companies and then shows the truth about the american standard of living. This is a photograph from 1937 but it also has a place in today's society. Today's government officials paint the picture of the perfect little society and how they can fix issues or make changes if elected or re-elected. This photograph represents the current "American way" as well as the past. Thank you Margaret Bourke-White.
